50 Shades (or States) of Green

By Anton C. Jones

The true color of racism is
GREEN
The middle of the rainbow
The center of it all….

GREEN

None of us want to BE it
But all of us want to have it
And those of us who got it
Don’t want to be without it.
If we got too much we spread it
to others who maybe need it
The true color of racism is…

GREEN

Envy spilling out of the billfold

GREEN

From Washington to Benjamins
And everything in between
The true color of racism is

GREEN

Every shade of

GREEN

The kindergarten standard when coloring sick faces
The color of The Exorcist devil’s spit
The color of Popeye’s power source before it was chicken
The superhuman hue of the Hulk

GREEN

The hiss of venom through veins
seeping into our very foundation [dollars]

GREEN

The flood waters breeching inadequate levees
The skittle that adds tartness to everyone’s tongue
That residue on your skin from that cheap fake ring
The folding cha-ching
That binds…
That shackles..
That unites everything.

GREEN

Checks and Balances Balanced by Backdated Checks
Senseless Cents that quantify respect
Congressional Bills spun out of 50 dollar bills
What else gets spun from Rumplestiltskin’s wheel?
Let’s be real
When you spin straw into gold
It’s still straw!
And a house of straw can’t handle hurricane winds.
It’s a short lived lazy win that
Wolves on Wall Street
Huff… Puff and Blow right it
Change exchanged for change
But nothing’s changed.

GREEN

The handle of the whip, the bridle grip,
The steering wheel of the culture ship

GREEN

That grape before it became a Raisin in the Sun
That artificial turf we kneel on in solidarity under billion dollar lights
The ad space and billboards promising progress and change

Nothing glows brighter than

GREEN

The color absent when these promises are put into practice.
The color of stagnant movements and complacency
The color of earned apathy

GREEN

The color of “correct” and yes and go
The color of word counts and “one size fits most”
The color that shaped the very mold
That was never really made for you or your flow

but you

got-to-do-with-what-you-got-given-to-you

don’t-bite-the-hand-that-feeds-you-

Climb the ladder high enough and you’ll see too

Unless they silence you…

The col..

of

…ism

is

G…..
