Black Warrior Poem

By Lisa Marie Brimmer

the thick smoke
is an answered call
come to know this
bitter earth
remember how to taste

black pepperblack powder
black rage go on go
refresh your spirit
carry a fortress
carry a mother’s
carry a jagged leaf
pass flowers

and if you can’t give
anymore try to be natural
in this storm we can be a new
sunflower with arms ready
and giant with petals open
we can collect the water
know the drill be kind
make commitments

and when the heart is burning
balance our debts
and fly on fly on
